Bamboo Projects: Sprouting hope in the local community

Henzells Hero recipient Chris Paterson is sprouting hope for people living with disabilities and mental health issues across the Sunshine Coast, by adding water.

With his wife Kristy, the pair spearheads Bamboo Projects, a registered charity and NDIS provider offering mateship and support to those in need.

One of the main focuses of the group is providing purpose and human connections through the common cause of cleaning up the Coast’s waterways - a win for the participants and the environment alike.

Chris has entered positive talks with state and federal government representatives to acquire much-needed funding to continue the project, and hopes to secure a major corporate sponsor for a new 9.5-metre boat, currently nearing completion.

“We hope to launch the boat with an open day in April. It has side access for wheelchairs, to offer social connection for people of all abilities, enjoying time out on the water,’’ he said.

Henzells Agency was proud to take a leading role in promoting one of Bamboo Projects’ major fundraising and environmental initiatives, a recycling program staffed by community members who might have difficulty engaging in the mainstream workforce.

Henzells put its hand up for one of the dedicated collection bins for cans and bottles to be placed in our office, and several of our staff members also supported the cause, by using the bins at home.

The recycling program, now running in businesses, homes and caravan parks from Moreton to Noosa has raised more than $50,000, and most importantly provided a sense of purpose for marginalised members of the community.

“When you watch the news you can feel bombarded by a lot of negativity, but you only have to look to your local community working together to be inspired by what people can do,’’ Chris said.

“With our cleanups, we are not only removing tonnes of rubbish, but providing employment and sense of connection and respect for the community.”

As a proud part of the local community since 1935, Henzells is very thankful to the many people who go above and beyond, volunteering their time and efforts so others can shine.
