Michael conquers one of the world’s toughest hikes
From Caloundra to Kokoda, our sales agent for Caloundra West and Little Mountain,
Michael Fay, has conquered one of the world’s toughest treks.
After months of training and preparation, Michael has returned to the comforts of coastal life following an inspirational journey along Papua New Guinea’s revered Kokoda Track.
The Kokoda Track is a challenging 96-kilometre trail in Papua New Guinea, known for its treacherous terrain and historical significance.
It holds a special place in Australian history as the site of a critical World War II campaign where Australian soldiers, alongside the 'Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels,' valiantly defended against Japanese forces, to protect Australia from invasion.
Following in the Diggers’ footsteps is an experience Michael will never forget.
After spending night one in Port Moresby, he and 14 other trekkers flew to Popondetta at the northern end of the track, and then took a three-hour ride in the back of a truck to Kokoda township for the start of the hike.
The group spent eight days sweating it out through very steep and slippery terrain and visited picturesque highland villages, where the team medic held some much-needed clinics.
Finally, Michael re-emerged from the jungle at Owers’ Corner to a very much appreciated SP Lager and a hot chicken roll.
“What an amazing, humbling and sobering experience to get an appreciation of the conditions our Diggers, and the ‘Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels’ endured to ensure our way of life,’’ Michael said.
“It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. To be able to share this with the descendants of the original Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels made the trek even more special.”
Congratulations Michael on this amazing achievement!
