The Family
The Henzells’ were a quintessential family from humble beginnings. After serving in World War 1, Roy Henzell Senior became a keen businessman working as an accountant and trying his hand as an oil tycoon until moving from Brisbane to Caloundra.
Henzells Agency has remained a successful family business since 1935, spanning three generations and producing a legacy that founding father, Roy Henzell Senior would be proud of today.
The Beginning
The legend behind the Henzells brand dates back to 1935 when the original Roy Henzell established the agency in partnership with his friend, Bill Farlow. By 1941, Roy had bought out his partner and lived with his young family at the back of the office on Bulcock Street.
The family bought and sold various properties and had around 30 pieces of accommodation to rent out, until 1946 when they made the leap and bought a large undeveloped piece of land in Golden Beach. Mostly swamp, the property now makes up the upmarket Pelican Waters Estate.
Henzells also developed a number of other prime sites, including Mayes estate and large areas at Dicky Beach and Currimundi Lake. Roy also built some rental accommodation, houses and flats, setting a higher standard of accommodation to what was available at the time… but this was just the beginning of a great legacy.
The Vision
Roy Henzell had a strong vision – to buy land in the area he loved and let progress and development catch up with him. He wanted the Caloundra area to become the same ‘resort centre’ as its southern counterparts, which he did until his death in 1961.
His family made sure his vision continued when his son, Bevan Henzell took over the business. Bevan, like his father, was a great businessman and soon expanded the operation to include 3 salespeople. He also continued to develop Golden Beach and Aroona while becoming increasingly involved in project marketing and auctions.
Into the Future
The Henzells family aimed at developing various shops in the main street of Caloundra. In 1972, Bevan moved the business into bigger premises on Bulcock Street, which is still known as Henzells Plaza today.
Bevan Henzell was well-liked in the Caloundra community, being described as “the fairest man I’ve ever met” by the Shire Chairman. In 1982 Bevan died, leaving the operation of the still thriving business to his wife Judy, their son Roy Henzell Junior and business partner Des Rockliff.
Within 11 years the Henzell family business had passed from the second to the third generation of the family. It was in 1990 that a close friend of Roy’s, Garry Waters, was brought in as a partner. In 2019 Roy and Gary are still at the helm of Henzells Agency and have grown it into one of the Sunshine Coast’s most respected agencies.
There is a true family spirit which continues today with the partners carrying the torch into the new millennium guiding projects which had been first envisioned by Roy’s grandfather, nurtured and grown by Bevan and then developed into fruition by current members of the Henzells team.
Our Legacy
Much of the land that Caloundra is built on today has been either directly owned or transacted through Henzells Agency. The part the business has played in the growth of the town and the community itself it immense, from land donations for schools and parks to building major residential developments that have seen the area grow into a sought after lifestyle destination.
On land purchased by Roy in 1946, Pelican Waters has emerged as the major project developed by Henzells Agency in a long list of developments. It is a thriving community in excess of 5500 residents; a Greg Norman designed golf course, shopping centre, resort hotel and tavern. It caters for waterfront living on canals as well as unit living and residential allotments.
Approvals have now been obtained for the final stages consisting of 1575 homes, a marina and a tavern centre. The Caloundra City Private School has set new standards of education on the Sunshine Coast.
A milestone was reached on Henzells Agency 75th Anniversary; the Henzells Pelican Waters Foundation was established to support the Caloundra community, local charities and families who do not receive government support. It enabled Henzells Agency to expand it’s local involvement in addition to the support it already gives to Metropolitan Caloundra Surf Lifesaving Club, Ithaca – Caloundra City Life Saving Club, Pelican Waters Swimming Club, Pelican Waters Bowls Club, Caloundra Golf Club, Compass Institute, Riding for the Disabled and individuals in need. The charity has donated more than $205,000 since its inception on top of supporting a range of local and national initiatives.
It's not about looking good or 'giving back' because we feel we have to. Henzells Agency has been around for such a long time that we really are part of the community and the community is in us. Not only is Henzells Agency a leader in the real estate industry, but by carving out a legacy in philanthropic work, we hope to lead the way in goodwill and generosity too.
